Navajo Nation Coronavirus Death Toll Now More Than 400

Navajo Nation officials say the total known deaths from COVID-19 on the reservation have surpassed 400 since the outbreak began.

Yesterday the tribe reported five more fatalities and 45 new known cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to more than 8,000. Health officials say despite continue infections, cases continue to flatten as daily curfews, weekend lockdowns, and other measures remain in place on the Navajo Nation.

President Jonathan Nez says residents are mostly following the orders and asks those who have left the Navajo Nation during the weekend curfews to self-quarantine for 14 days. Nez has signed a resolution canceling all upcoming fairs, rodeos and other public events to help decrease the spread of coronavirus. The measures were passed by the Navajo Council earlier this month.

The tribe in recent days has reported a fraction of new cases compared to the states of Arizona and New Mexico. The tribal resolution cancels the Navajo Nation Fair, rodeos and roping events and restricts local pow wows and roadside sales on the reservation.
