University Union Of Northern Arizona Plans Protest Against NAU In-Person Reopening

KNAU

The University Union of Northern Arizona, American Federation of Teachers is planning a march this afternoon at Flagstaff City Hall demanding that administrators at Northern Arizona University prioritize the health of the NAU and Flagstaff communities amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Union representatives believe NAU should reassess plans for in-person classes and a full campus return this fall. NAU has issued basic safety guidelines, including mask wearing, hand washing, social distancing and self-temperature-monitoring. However, many in the NAU and Flagstaff communities have taken to social media and other public forums to express concerns that more precautions need to be taken and that the university needs to offer classes online this fall in the interest of public safety. This week, NAU confirmed an undisclosed number of student athletes have tested positive for COVID-19. A growing number of colleges and universities across the country are choosing to take most classes online through the fall semester, at least.
