Navajo Nation COVID-19 Cases Flatten But Leaders Encourage Continued Safety Measures

Navajo Nation health officials continue to urge residents to wear masks and physically distance as cases on the reservation flatten.

President Jonathan Nez says avoiding crowds and practicing COVID-19 safety measures will also make the upcoming flu season less severe.

"I believe that if we continue wearing masks, practicing social distancing, staying home as much as possible, avoiding large crowds, and washing your hands often, it will help keep the number of flu cases relatively low as well," Nez says. "We have to keep fighting COVID-19 together and that will help us during the flu season as well. We will be much better prepared."

The tribe Sunday reported 11 new cases of coronavirus and one additional death attributed to the virus. Total fatalities on the Navajo Nation have now topped 500 since the pandemic began. Nearly three-quarters of the 9,800 people who’ve been infected there have recovered. The tribe ended a 32-hour weekend lockdown Monday morning.
