Flagstaff City Council Won’t Rescind Mask Mandate Despite Ducey Order

The Flagstaff City Council says the local COVID-19 mask mandate will remain in place despite an executive order yesterday from Governor Doug Ducey preventing towns, cities and counties from enforcing them.

Flagstaff officials, however, say the order won’t be enforced as staff look into the issue.

The council blasted Ducey’s decision to lift most remaining restrictions, saying it’s not in the best interests of public health and erodes home rule.

The governor says with declining cases in Arizona and more vaccines available larger gatherings can resume and bars can return to normal operations.

About 16% of the state’s population has been fully vaccinated. Many health experts say a 70–80% rate is necessary for herd immunity from COVID.
