A well-known Southwestern conservationist is currently missing in Yellowstone National Park.

Accordinbg to the National Park Service, Kim Crumbo was reported overdue Sunday while on a four-night backpacking trip at Shoshone Lake. Park personnel eventually located a vacant campsite on the shore. Crumbo’s half-brother, Mark O’Neill from Washington state, was found dead.

Ground and air search and rescue crews are continuing the search for Crumbo and the incident remains under investigation. Shoshone lake has an average temperature of around 48 F and survival time is estimated to be only 20 to 30 minutes in such cold water.

Crumbo is currently the wildlands coordinator for the Rewilding Institute and a founding Board Member of Wild Arizona. He’s advocated for the recovery of carnivores in the region including the Mexican gray wolf and is a retired park ranger and a former Navy SEAL.
