The North Rim of the Grand Canyon will close Wednesday as the park transitions to winter operations.

Grand Canyon National Park will transition to winter operations beginning Wednesday.

The North Rim will be closed to vehicle traffic and State Route 67 will reopen in May along with North Rim services.

In addition, Hermit Road on the South Rim will open to private vehicles, and shuttle bus service will be suspended.

Several other South Rim shuttle schedules and routes will also change. See the Grand Canyon's website for details on shuttle service.

Also beginning Wednesday, online reservations for the Mather Campground will no longer be available for December, January and February and will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Officials urge travelers in the park to be prepared for winter driving conditions and always pack blankets, flashlights and other emergency supplies.
