A California-based developer has withdrawn an application to build a controversial "glamping," or glamorous camping, project on nearly 18-acres of private land in Sedona.
The company AutoCamp had proposed 100 campsites with fire pits along with 85 Airstream trailers, a clubhouse and other amenities near Bear Mountain.
About 1,300 residents opposed the project saying it’s an ecologically sensitive area prone to wildfire. Environmental groups also fought the proposal along with the Hopi Tribe and Yavapai Apache Nation who say the area is a sacred site and contains cultural items, petroglyphs and ancestral remains.
In a letter to Yavapai County managers, AutoCamp says it plans to eventually turn in a revised application after meeting with local officials and community members.
