Two wildfires were reported today near Flagstaff. A fire near Kelly Canyon was caused when someone reportedly set off fireworks, according to officials with the Coconino National Forest. The blaze was kept to about 6 acres. Fire crews are working on another fire east of Flagstaff on Highway 89 north of Wupatki Trails and Doney Park at milepost 432. County officials advise people to avoid the area if possible and be aware of first responders.
Meanwhile, several national forests in Arizona will impose campfire and smoking restrictions aimed at preventing human-caused wildfires. The Coconino, Kaibab and Tonto national forests this week issued coordinated statements announcing that they were imposing restrictions effective this coming Friday. The Apache-Sitgreaves and Prescott forests have also called for Stage I restrictions. The Department of Forestry and Fire Management will also implement State I restrictions tomorrow on state-owned and managed land in central and northwestern Arizona. A wildfire near Crown King has burned nearly 9 square miles of brush and grass. Fire officials say it is 15% contained.
