Governor Ducey Gets Vaccine Under New 55+ Eligibility

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey today received a Covid-19 vaccination, just one day after the state opened up vaccination to people 55 and older.

State health director Dr. Cara Christ  administered the 56-year-old governor’s vaccine. Ducey tweeted photos of his shot during an unannounced visit to a mass vaccination site at the Arizona Cardinal’s stadium in Glendale. The governor’s inoculation comes as the state’s Covid-19 death toll today surpassed 16,000, with 81 new deaths reported. Arizona’s daily increase of newly confirmed infections was the smallest in three months today with 849 additional known cases. As of Monday, Covid-19 patients occupied Arizona hospital inpatient beds at the lowest number since early November.

Arizonans age 55 and older are now eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine. The state Department of Health Services opened 50,000 appointments Tuesday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale and the Phoenix Municipal Stadium for the lowered age eligibility group. Appointments will start Thursday with registration available through the state health department’s website. Officials in Yuma County say they may open another state-run vaccination site later this month at the Yuma Civic Center.
