Grand Canyon Crews Searching For Missing Man Below The Rim

NPS

UPDATE 8/24/21: Crews at the Grand Canyon have found a hiker missing since Sunday from the Hermit Creek Camp area. This afternoon, search and rescue personnel located Arturo Hernandez from Surprise via helicopter along the Hermit Trail near Breezy Point. Officials say he’s in stable condition and awaiting a helicopter evacuation.

Crews at the Grand Canyon are conducting a search for a hiker missing since Sunday from the Hermit Creek Camp area.

Park dispatch received a call Monday about two overdue hikers but hours later one of them reached the trailhead without incident. The other hiker, Arturo Hernandez from Surprise, was last seen on the Tonto Trail Sunday while on the return trip to the rim.

Rangers conducted ground and aerial searches but weren’t able to find him. Ground teams along with a Park Service helicopter are continuing the search and focusing on the Hermit and Tonto trails and the Monument Creek drainage. Hernandez is 48 years old, 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds with gray hair and brown eyes.
