The Hopi Tribe has extended its lockdown order for another month amid continuing transmission of COVID-19.
Hopi health officials say about 25% of residents who test for the virus are receiving positive results. The tribe currently has a higher case rate per capita than the state of Arizona. Hopi officials believe the surge is happening in part because many residents traveled to different villages or left the reservation during the holiday season. The lockdown mandates a daily curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., mask wearing in public, and restricts both secular and ceremonial gatherings among members of different households. Residents may leave for work, medical care, and necessities including food, water and firewood. The executive order states residents who violate the rules may be subject to “criminal penalties”.
