Native American Heritage Day Honors Accomplishments And Sacrifices

NPS/Erin Wittaker

Today is National Native American Heritage Day. It’s part of Native American Heritage Month, honoring the diverse cultures, histories and contributions of the Indigenous people of this country.

The National Congress of American Indians says, “Heritage Month is a time to educate the general public about tribes and raise awareness about the challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present.” There are more than 570 federally recognized tribes in the United States, with 22 in Arizona. President George H.W. Bush first designated November as Native American Heritage Month in 1990, after Congress approved a resolution. Every sitting President since then has signed a similar proclamation.
