Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff today in honor of former tribal official and medicine man Earnest Becenti Junior.

He died last weekend. According to Nez’s office, Becenti served in the U-S Army during World War II and earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He later served on the Navajo Nation as a chapter official, Eastern Navajo Agency Council president, school board member, county commissioner, and a member of the New Mexico mounted patrol. Nez praised Becenti for his sacrifices and service for the Navajo people. Funeral services will be held in Gallup, New Mexico later this morning.
