State health officials Sunday reported more than 2,000 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases and eight additional deaths. The latest numbers increased the state’s pandemic totals to more than 1,000,000 cases and nearly 19,000 known deaths since the pandemic began more than a year ago. It marked the first time in five days that Arizona new daily cases were below 3,000. The Navajo Nation on Sunday reported 24 new COVID-19 cases, but no additional deaths. The latest numbers pushed the tribe’s case total to more than 32,000 since the pandemic began more than a year ago. The known death toll is 1,403. Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez has said all tribal executive branch employees will need to be fully vaccinated against the coronavirus by the end of September or be required to submit to regular testing. The new rules apply to full, part-time and temporary employees.
