The battle for control of Congress is solidifying into a race about President Donald Trump.
Republicans are hitching their fortunes to their party’s leader, while Democrats position themselves as a bulwark against him as well as partners in a potential Joe Biden White House.
Usually a president’s position at the top of the ticket boosts his party’s chances, but Trump’s decline in some battleground state like Arizona is shifting the congressional map. House Democrats are expected to retain their majority and the party could also flip the GOP-controlled Senate.
According to Real Clear Politics, Democrat Mark Kelly leads Arizona Republican Senator Martha McSally by more than 11 percent in an average of recent polls. The website also shows Biden ahead of Trump by 5 points.
