Wildfire On Navajo Nation Forces Evacuations And Road Closures

A lightning-caused wildfire near Wood Springs on the Navajo Nation has forced the evacuation of some residents in the area.

Navajo Nation fire officials say Navajo Route 7 from Sawmill to Chinle and Wood Springs, and Navajo Route 26 between Nazlini and Sawmill are closed as rangers evacuate some residents in immediate danger in the communities of Ganado and Kin Dah Lichii. The tribe is currently working to set up an incident command center, as well as organizing to provide shelter and relief for displaced residents, while being mindful of the risks posed by COVID-19.

The Navajo Area BIA is urging all residents to avoid the wildfire area due to hazardous terrain, fire spread and road accessibility. Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez released a statement last night saying, "All residents in the area must be very cautious and we ask that everyone cooperate with the emergency responders, especially if you are asked to evacuate your residence."
