The state's top school official is now formally the target of a recall effort.
Opponents of Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas filed paperwork with the Secretary of State's office Tuesday to begin the recall effort. They have 120 days to collect nearly 370,000 valid signatures to force a recall election.
The group's recall petition cites an ongoing feud between Douglas and the state Board of Education and says she's focused more on how to increase her power rather than on students and school performance.
Douglas spokeswoman Sally Stewart said the recall isn't on her "radar" and she remains focused on supporting students, parents and educators.
If enough signatures are gathered and verified, a recall election will be held on the next statewide election date.
