An Arizona House panel has approved a bill by Senate President Steve Yarbrough that would ask voters to increase state Senate terms to four years from the current two years.
The Chandler Republican testified Thursday that longer terms would allow state senators to focus more on representing constituents and less on campaigning for office. Yarbrough said he wants to let citizens decide whether it is a good idea or not.
The House Government Committee voted 5-3 on Thursday to send Senate Concurrent Resolution 1027 to the full House. House passage would place the measure in the 2018 general election ballot because the Senate approved it on a 19-11 vote in February.
