Gov. Doug Ducey's plan to allow universities keep $37 million a year in sales tax revenue and use it to help fund a $1 billion construction bond package faces major opposition in the Legislature.
The proposal included in Ducey's executive budget faces opposition from majority Republican lawmakers on several fronts. Many oppose the idea of allowing a specific entity to keep sales tax money because it will open the door to other raids on the state's biggest source of general fund revenue. Others believe universities already have too much money.
Senate President Steve Yarbrough said Monday there's little appetite in his chamber for the current proposal. Republican Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita said many House members also have concerns.
Asked about the opposition Friday, Ducey said "we'll see about that."
