The Atlanta Hawks win the No. 1 pick of the NBA draft

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Michel Martin. Well, one lucky lottery winner is happy this morning. No, not that lottery - we're talking the NBA draft lottery. The 14 teams that miss the playoffs each season get a chance to win the top draft pick. The worse the record, the higher their odds of winning. With the league's 10th-worst record this season, the Atlanta Hawks had just 3% odds of getting the top pick, but what do you know? Luck was on their side, and now they'll pick first in next month's draft. You can't win if you don't play. It's MORNING EDITION. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
