From Stem to Stern: the story of the first end-to end hike of Grand Canyon, Feb 27th Cline Library

As a central figure in the Grand Canyon river guiding community, Kenton Grua occupies an historically significant place in Grand Canyon history, but until now, details of his hike have been unknown. This event takes place on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the first step of the hike. This event is for anyone interested in Grand Canyon, hiking, river guiding, and the history of the Colorado Plateau. The presentation will include a Q and A style interview, select readings of excerpts from Kenton's journals, and a display of the equipment used on the hike. We will explore his motivations, the challenges he encountered, the personal insights gained during the trek and the historic significance of having made the first recorded hike of the entire length of Grand Canyon. Discussion will include details regarding the logistics of such an undertaking and how addressed them. Attendees will have an opportunity to view the topographic maps used during his hike.
