Riordan Mansion Lunchtime Lecture: Elden Pueblo – An historic, cultural jewel of Flagstaff
Elden Pueblo was literally Flagstaff’s first neighborhood. While humans roamed the
region back into Paleolithic times, the earliest settlements are at Elden Pueblo;
documented from about A.D. 970, with gradual depopulation of the site around A.D.
1275 when families moved to other areas.
Lisa Deem and Peter Pilles will team up to take you on a journey of Elden Pueblo’s
contemporary story. Peter will cover the excavations and discoveries contributing to the
overall history of the Sinagua culture of northern Arizona, ancestors of today’s Hopi,
Zuni and other Puebloan peoples of the American Southwest.
Lisa will speak to the educational efforts made to share the story of this moment in
history and its people with the public; many Native descendants live in the region,
frequently visit, and still consider this place Pasiwvi, or, “The Place of Coming Together”.
