Riordan Mansion Lunchtime Lecture: The First Lady of Milton: Celine Riordan
Before Timothy and Michael Riordan made Flagstaff their home and moved into their beloved 1904 mansion, their older brother Denis Matthew Riordan and his wife, Celiné Beer Riordan, established the family’s legacy in town. While Matt worked as a prominent businessman as Superintendent of the Ayer Timber Company and helped to cement one of the area’s largest regional industries, Celiné led a complex life as a key social contributor to the town as she hosted social events at the pair’s Milltown home and pushed for educational initiatives in the community. With her later move to Los Angeles in the early 1900s came her increased involvement in Progressive-era reform movements as she participated in a variety of reform initiatives and founded her own cultural associations. Celiné’s story can reflect the avenues that she and women like her took in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to establish and challenge ideas of community identity. Come learn about Celiné and Matt’s lives in town, her community contributions, Progressive-era reforms, and more.
