Sunset Crater and the Bonito Flow Field Excursion
Sunset Crater and the Bonito Flow Field Excursion
As an extension of his NHI talk “Sunset Crater and the Bonito Flow: Geological Processes and Human Interactions,” Dr. Jeff Meyer will lead a day-long field trip to Sunset Crater and the Bonito Flow.
Sunset Crater erupted only 940 years ago, creating a cinder or scoria cone, and it is one of over 600 short-lived volcanoes in northern Arizona’s San Francisco volcanic field. We have obtained special permission to take up to 12 people to parts of the flow that the general public rarely has access to! Dr. Meyer will give an overview of the San Francisco Volcanic Field as we approach Sunset Crater, then cover the events of the Sunset Crater eruption. Finally, we will spend time on the Bonito flow, looking at its unique characteristics.
Cost: $85 (Van transportation included)
Time: Meet at the Natural History Institute (126 N. Marina St., Prescott) at 7:00am and return at 6:00pm
Details: An off-trail hike of about 1.5 miles on moderate terrain is planned, and another mile or so of on-trail hiking is likely. The hiking pace will be moderate to slow, as there are lots of things to see and discuss. Bring a sack lunch, water and day-pack for your hike, and dress appropriately for the weather that day (7000’ el.). It should be a nice fall day with good views of the leaves turning yellow on the nearby San Francisco peaks!
