The Mary D. Fisher Theatre is home for the Met Live Opera programs for the 2024-2025 season, presented by the Sedona International Film Festival.

The season concludes with Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” live via simulcast on Saturday, May 31 at 10:00 a.m. and the encore presentation on Wednesday, June 4 at 3 p.m.

Plan to come early as John Steinbrunner will lead a pre-opera talk one hour before the LIVE production on Saturday.

The Metropolitan Opera’s 2024–25 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of Rossini’s effervescent comedy “Il Barbiere di Siviglia”. Russian mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina headlines a winning ensemble as the feisty heroine, Rosina, alongside American tenor Jack Swanson, in his Met debut, as her secret beloved, Count Almaviva.

Moldovan baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky stars as Figaro, the ingenious barber of Seville, with Hungarian bass-baritone Peter Kálmán as Dr. Bartolo and Russian bass Alexander Vinogradov as Don Basilio rounding out the principal cast. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts Bartlett Sher’s madcap production.

Rossini’s perfectly honed treasure has become what may be the world’s most popular comic opera. Its buoyant good humor and elegant melodies have delighted the diverse tastes of every generation for two centuries, and several of the opera’s most recognizable tunes have entered the world’s musical unconscious, most notably the introductory patter song of the swaggering Figaro, the titular barber of Seville.

The Met Live Opera’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Saturday, May 31 at 10:00 a.m. (live simulcast) with an encore on Wednesday, June 4 at 3 p.m. The pre-opera talk will take place one hour before the live Saturday simulcast.

The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Georgia O’Keeffe: The Brightness of Light” showing May 30-June 4 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre.

“Georgia O’Keeffe: the Brightness of Light” explores the life and art of the most important American woman artist of the 20th century.

Known as the “Mother of American Modernism,” O’Keeffe exploded on the New York art scene in the 1920s with her paintings of flowers, bones, and the beauty of nature. Nude photographs of O’Keeffe taken by her lover, Alfred Stieglitz, shocked the public and contributed to the perception that her paintings were sexually charged.

In the 1970s, O’Keeffe, famously isolated in the New Mexico desert, emerged as an iconic role model for second wave feminists.

From Academy Award-winning director Paul Wagner, the film features music by Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch, narration by Hugh Dancy, and Claire Danes as the Voice of Georgia O'Keeffe.

This beginner-friendly course introduces the fundamentals of music notation and theory, including note reading, clefs, rhythm, intervals, scales, and familiar chord progressions.

This class is perfect for:

Beginners curious about how music works
Parents or teachers helping kids with music lessons
Self-taught musicians ready to fill gaps in their knowledge
Community music ensemble members who want to improve their reading and music theory understanding (Flagstaff Community Band, Orchestra Northern Arizona, Master Chorale of Flagstaff, etc.)
Lifelong learners exploring a creative new hobby

Through a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises, we'll spend three weeks:

Decoding notes on the staff
Clapping and counting rhythms
Singing intervals and simple melodies
Identifying common chord patterns

In addition, you’ll receive curated practice sheets, recommended practice apps and websites, and listening examples to reinforce skills between sessions. By the end, you’ll have the tools to read sheet music.

Class meets Mondays and Thursdays: June 2, 5, 9, 12, 16, 19; from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Instructor Caitlin McCready is a professional horn player, educator, and arts administrator based in Flagstaff. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Music at Arizona State University. Before moving to Flagstaff, Caitlin spent four years at Southeast Missouri State University, where she taught music theory and aural skills.

An advocate for adult learning and community music, Caitlin is also the Executive Director of the Flagstaff Community Band.

When not doing all of that, Caitlin also performs regularly with the Flagstaff Symphony and other orchestras throughout AZ, NV, and CO.

“Blind AF” just won the top award — Audience Choice Best of Fest Documentary — at the recent Sedona International Film Festival.

An unflinching, emotionally raw story of courage, transcendence and the healing power of self-belief, “Blind AF” tells the journey of a blind female Paralympic champion and multiple world-record holder, Shawn Cheshire as she becomes the first blind person to ride a single, non-tandem bike across the United States — 3600 miles in 60 straight days — while confronting painful truths about her past that she spent a lifetime trying to outrun.

Driven as much by the determination to live independently as by the restlessness and vulnerability borne of her complex PTSD, Shawn forges a brave – and often dangerous – path through fear that stands as a powerful testament to the human spirit, and an encouragement for all of us to live our most authentic lives, whatever the risks.

While working as a paramedic in 2009, Shawn Cheshire, a 36-year-old Army veteran and single mother of two, suffered a brain injury that left her suddenly and completely without sight. Spiraling into a debilitating suicidal depression, Shawn sought treatment at a VA hospital where, through a combination of adaptive sports and treatment for complex PTSD, she chooses to live in a new reality. Despite her lack of training, within three years Shawn was competing at the 2016 Paralympic games in Rio and would go on to become a 13-time paracycling US National Champion and a multiple world-record holder of extreme adventures. But her biggest challenge was still ahead.

“Blind AF” is at once a thrilling epic of athletic achievement and a transformative portrait of emotional resilience and bravery.

The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to partner with Unify Sedona to present “LGBTQ+ Shorts” on Monday and Friday, June 2 and 6, at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre in observation of Pride Month.

This special shorts program will feature a selection of audience favorite LGBTQ+ films from recent Sedona Film Festivals.

The lineup will include:

BUSCANDO ALMA: A Honduran immigrant is given the chance to meet her mother after nearly two decades of separation. As she grapples with the uncertainty of their reunion, she is confronted by tumultuous memories of her past.

PARKER AND THE GREEN DRESS: A queer teen is torn between prom dreams and the fear of disappointing her grandmother. A chance encounter with an elderly woman, who harbors her own hidden truth, sparks a journey of mutual discovery. Together they confront the secrets that shape their lives. Can they embrace their truths before time slips away?

THIS IS JAN: Alone in a hotel, Jan has the solitude and freedom to shed the identity imposed on them by the tight constraints of the era's societal norms. Relieved of that burden, Jan relishes the opportunity to transform into the person they believe they truly are. Bolstered by newfound confidence, they push their own boundaries, only to discover that nothing is as it seems. When compelled to decide between what the world expects of them and who they want to be, Jan embraces who they truly are.

OUT SMART: In this short satire, a teenage boy seeks acceptance from his parents when he 'comes out' — not as gay, but as smart.

The shorts will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Dawn Cobalt, director and editor of “Out Smart”.

Momentum Aerial is now enrolling for aerial summer camps (ages 6-16)! Come learn Trapeze, Silks, and Lyra all while creating fun dance routines. Come one, come all, and see what it’s like to dance in the air!

There are 3 fun options for campers ages 6-12!:

Aerial and Circus Camp (9am-2pm) (full send!)
Aerial Camp (9am-12pm): Campers will receive fundamental instruction in Trapeze, Silks, Lyra (aerial hoop), and create fun routines to show off to family and friends on the last day of camp!
Circus Camp (12pm-2pm): Campers will learn stilt walking, partner acrobatics, beginning tumbling, circus props like hula hooping and juggling, and tons of exciting circus games!

Our summer camps are a fantastic way to get introduced to the aerial community. This art form is a creative way for little ones to stay active in the sunny weather without getting sunburnt, and there is no experience necessary to begin. Agathe (Camille Rutherford) is a hopelessly clumsy yet charming young woman, who works in the legendary Shakespeare & Co. bookshop in Paris. While she dreams of being a successful writer, and of experiencing love akin to a Jane Austen novel, she finds herself desperately single and plagued by writer’s block.

When Agathe’s best friend (Pablo Pauly) gets her invited to the Jane Austen Writers' Residency in England, she finally has her Jane Austen moment … and is caught in a very unexpected romantic triangle.

Agathe must let go of her insecurities to decide what she really wants for herself, and to achieve her romantic and professional dreams.

Wondering what to do for summer break? Come to the Highlands Center for Nature Camp!
Campers will spend all of their time outdoors, learning about different field sciences. Campers will go from being ornithologists to chemists, to entomologists to anything in between. We will explore, play games, take part in team building, and craft and discover more about the Central Highlands around us. There are limited spots in each age group, register soon!
