Residents, businesses and campgrounds in Jacob Lake remain evacuated as a large wildfire burns near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
According to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, about 230 people were initially evacuated from Jacob Lake and the surrounding areas. An additional 50 visitors were escorted out of the area over the weekend.
In addition, about 30 homes in the White Sage and Lonesome communities are under pre-evacuation orders. Highway 89A is closed east of Jacob Lake along with State Route 67.
Grand Canyon National Park officials have also closed the North Rim to visitors. Smoke from the fire is visible throughout the area and from the South Rim of the park. Stage II fire restrictions are in place at the Grand Canyon as well as on the Kaibab and Coconino national forests and many state, county and municipal lands.
The Mangum Fire has grown to nearly 25,000 acres and is 2 percent contained. It began last week on the Kaibab National Forest and the cause is under investigation.
