Coconino National Forest Crews Respond To Wildfire North Of Flagstaff

Cole Habay

Coconino National Forest fire crews responded early Monday morning to a wildfire 15 miles north of Flagstaff.

About a hundred personnel are working on the 20-plus-acre Slate Fire near Highway 180 and the border of the Kaibab National Forest. Officials say there will be occasional closures because of burnout operations, and travelers should find alternate routes to the Grand Canyon.

Meanwhile, fire crews on Sunday contained a small wildfire south of Flagstaff near State Route 89A. It produced smoke visible from Kachina Village and didn’t threaten any structures. The cause of both fires is under investigation. Fire restrictions are in place across the region on almost all public lands and national forests.
