Arizona Reports 4,740 COVID-19 Cases Wednesday After 'Data Processing Issue'

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Arizona Department of Health Services reported 4,740 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday and 62 recent deaths. It marks the highest daily case rate reported since a statewide spike in January, according to ADHS data.

In a statement Tuesday, ADHS Interim Director Don Herrington warned of an uptick in Wednesday’s case report due to a “data processing issue.” A considerably lower rate — 822 cases — was reported Tuesday, along with no recent related deaths.

Before the hiccup in ADHS data, statewide case rates generally remained in the thousands, with the department reporting nearly 3,893 new cases on Saturday, Aug. 28.

State data shows as of Tuesday, 2,057 people were receiving in-patient treatment for the virus, marking the highest hospitalization rate since February.

As of Wednesday morning, 56% of Arizona’s total population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, ADHS reports.

The state’s 15 counties continue to display a high level of virus transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Coconino County, meanwhile, saw a slight decrease in weekly cases, according to its most recent report released Friday. The Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed 160 cases of the highly transmissible delta variant within the county.
