City of Flagstaff to begin separated bike lane pilot project on Butler Ave.

The City of Flagstaff next week will begin a pilot project to install separated bike lanes on Butler Avenue between Milton and Sawmill roads.

Between Monday and Friday crews will use traffic control devices and implement lane restrictions and ask that drivers find alternate routes and expect delays.

The project follows months of urging from community groups to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in the city. In May, a tow truck driver ran a red light at Butler and Beaver Street and collided with a group of cyclists who were advocating for bike commuting and safety. Cyclist Joanna Wheaton was killed and several others were injured.
