Fire activity on the lightning-caused Campbell Fire, which started July 10, 2023, near the town of Alpine in the White Mountains has slowed in recent days because of an uptick in precipitation.

Grand Canyon National Park fire managers plan to begin a prescribed burn on the South Rim Tuesday.

If weather conditions and fuel moisture are favorable they’ll ignite nearly 400 acres southwest of Highway 64 (Desert View Drive) through the park.

Officials say the most significant smoke impacts will be in the Town of Tusayan and along Desert View Drive as well as in Grand Canyon Village and parts of the inner canyon.

Drivers on Desert View Drive are asked to continue through the burn area with their lights on and avoid stopping where fire crews are working.

Ignitions could continue through Wednesday.
