A woman who has long opposed a massive development project in the town of Tusayan near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon has a strong lead in the mayoral race.
Clarinda Vail is hoping to oust incumbent Mayor Craig Sanderson. She leads by 22 votes in yesterday’s election. Coconino County Recorder Patty Hansen said Wednesday that at least two dozen ballots from Tusayan remain to be counted.
Millions drive through Tusayan each year on their way to the Grand Canyon’ South Rim. Developers have eyed the outpost nestled among the forest where restaurants, gift shops and hotels have lined the highway for decades.
