More Than 50 Illegal Campfires Discovered On Coconino National Forest Over Holiday Weekend

Coconino National Forest officials say staff discovered 52 illegal campfires over the holiday weekend.

Nearly all national forests and public lands in the region have implemented fire restrictions amid hot and dry weather. Coconino officials also reported a quarter-acre wildfire Monday near Rocky Park Road south of Flagstaff. The exact cause hasn’t been determined but it was the only known human-caused wildfire over Memorial Day weekend.

On the Kaibab National Forest, patrols located 19 illegal campfires between Friday and Monday. Officials say visitation on the region’s national forests was noticeably less than last year and no major fires ignited.

According to fire managers, they’re in discussions about possibly putting heightened fire restrictions in place in the coming weeks.
