Navajo Nation health officials yesterday reported 55 new known cases of COVID-19 and more death.
A mask mandate remains in place on the reservation where 1,400 people have died from the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.
Navajo leaders say the tribe is currently administering booster shots of COVID vaccine to those with compromised immune systems and hopes to offer them to the broader population in the fall. According to the Navajo Department of Health, more than 121,000 people on the reservation are now fully vaccinated.
Tribal President Jonathan Nez has said all Navajo Nation executive branch employees will need to be fully vaccinated against the virus that causes COVID-19 by the end of September or be required to submit to regular testing. The new rules apply to full, part-time and temporary employees, including those working for tribal enterprises like utilities, shopping centers and casinos.
