Phoenix City Council Narrowly Approves Civilian Oversight Of Police

Phoenix.gov

Phoenix City Council members have approved a citizen review board with the power to investigate police after a raucous meeting that stretched over five hours Tuesday evening.

The council voted 5 to 4 in favor of the review board.

Council members have been examining different proposals for monitoring the police after Phoenix had more officer-involved shootings in 2018 than any other police department in the country.

The proposal comes after the uproar over a videotaped encounter between officers and a black family whose young daughter took a doll from a dollar store last year.

The vote Tuesday came after dozens of mostly Hispanic and African American community members called for a citizen review board with investigative powers.
