Eats and Beats

It takes good ingredients to make good beer—grain, yeast, hops, a dash of honey or a squeeze of fresh cherries to add subtle flavor. This month more than two dozen breweries in Arizona tried out a new ingredient: purified wastewater. The Pure Water Brew Challenge raised awareness about water reuse and also inspired some tasty new beers. KNAU’s Melissa Sevigny went to local Flagstaff brewery Wanderlust, for our segment Eats and Beats: stories about food and music. 


Resistance and rebellion are the essence of punk rock. Brother and sister musicians Clayson and Jeneda Benally embraced those ideals growing up on the Navajo Nation. As teenagers they toured with their band Blackfire, performing with legendary rockers like Joey Ramone and Chris Cornell. The Benallys’ current project, Sihasin is a politically-charged bass-and-drums duo with deep roots in punk rock, activism and the bonds of family. It’s mushroom hunting season in Northern Arizona. People come from all over to forage edible fungi from the monsoon-soaked woods, and they’re cooking up some tasty dishes. KNAU’s Aaron Granillo has this audio postcard in the latest installment of our occasional series, Eats and Beats, stories about food and music.
