Mountain Bike Skills
Whether you are new to mountain biking, looking to dust off the bike and get back in the saddle, or just want to improve your skills, this class will benefit all skill levels and build your confidence on the trails. In this class you will learn essential mountain bike handling skills in a controlled environment.
Topics will include:
Basic bicycle fitting and setup
Proper body position, balance, and weight distribution to improve bike handling
Proper turning and cornering technique
Proper braking technique
Proper pedaling technique
Proper line choice in technical sections
Riding technical sections
Mountain biking etiquette
Choosing functional mountain biking apparel and equipment
Participants must bring the following:
Functioning mountain bicycle capable of riding low to moderate difficulty dirt trails
Helmet
Water pack or bottles
Snacks
Participants are also encouraged to bring a spare tube and bicycle specific multi-tool.
The first session will include meet and greet, check-over of bicycles, and a basic skills evaluation. Instruction will be in a parking lot setting followed by specific trail section instructional sessions.
The class meets at CCC's Lone Tree Campus on the following dates and times:
Thursday, June 15, 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
Saturday, June 17, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Vance Peterson has been an avid bike rider for over 30 years. While his riding experience includes many disciplines, Vance specializes in technical mountain bike riding. Professionally, he is a former bicycle mechanic, and is a Certified BICP Mountain Bike Skills Instructor. Vance is also a faculty member in CCC’s Construction Technology Program where he teaches courses on electrical systems, solar home design, blueprint reading, estimating, any many more subjects.
