The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Food and Country” showing Nov. 1-7 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres.

Ruth Reichl — trailblazing NY Times food critic, groundbreaking Gourmet Magazine editor, best-selling memoirist, and for decades one of the most influential figures shaping American food culture — grows concerned about the fate of small farmers, ranchers, and chefs as they wrestle with both immediate and systemic challenges as the pandemic takes hold.

Reichl reaches across political and social divides to discover innovators who are risking it all to survive on the front lines. As one person leads her to the next, she follows the unfolding stories of ranchers in Kansas and Georgia, farmers in Nebraska, Ohio, and the Bronx, a New England fisherman, and maverick chefs on both coasts.

As she witnesses them navigate intractable circumstances, Reichl shares pieces of her own life, and in doing so, begins to take stock of the path she has traveled and the ideals she left behind. Through her eyes, we get to know the humanity and struggle behind the food we eat.

“Food and Country” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres Nov. 1-7. Showtimes will be Friday and Tuesday, Nov. 1 and 5 at 6:30 p.m.; Sunday and Thursday, Nov. 3 and 7 at 3:30 p.m.; and Monday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m.

This multi-day adventure explores the rich ecology and natural history of the Gulf of California with Tom Fleischner and Lisa Floyd-Hanna.

We are thrilled to return to the rich marine and desert biodiversity hotspot of the Gulf of California in Mexico! The Gulf of California, México: Wild Islands, Rich Desert program will feature boat trips to observe seabirds, dolphins, whales, sea turtles, and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore one of the world's most diverse deserts, the Central Gulf Coast Subdivision of the Sonoran Desert. Additionally, they will engage closely with local communities, including the fishing/conservation community of Bahia Kino, and the Indigenous Comcaac (Seri) people of the Canal del Infiernillo. This region is truly a global treasure. We’ve had the good fortune of leading field programs here for decades.

This inspiring event offers participants the opportunity to contribute to a cause that affects countless lives, as we strive to make a difference for patients battling one of the most devastating cancers.

Learn the secrets of crime scene investigations, see police K9s at work, participate in Trunk-or-Treat and costume contests, and hear about ghosts, the paranormal, and crypts during CSI Day on Saturday, November 2, from 9am to noon, at Paradise Valley Community College, in M West Building. This event is open to all ages.

The PVCC Union Hills Campus is at 18401 N. 32nd Street, Phoenix, AZ 85032.

During CSI Day, participants will get hands-on experience in the forensics lab, including an examination of fingerprint and insect evidence. Also, join us for a Trunk-or-Treat with members of local law enforcement, who will distribute goodies to the kids.

Costume contests for the best police, CSI or superhero-related costume will be held, with prizes awarded to the contestants. Costume contests are open to all kids under 18, as well as to college students.

Then, from 11am to noon, Marianne Robb and Dave Rich of UAP-PD (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon-Police) will speak about REAL ENCOUNTERS: WHEN LAW ENFORCEMENT MEETS THE UNKNOWN to shed light on investigating Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), the paranormal, and crypts.

Arcosanti’s principle of learning by doing is exemplified in the community’s latest offering, the Fall Land Stewardship and Sustainable Technology workshop. This four-week workshop take place from Monday, Oct. 14, through Friday, Nov. 8.

During this immersive experience, attendees will connect to the majestic High Sonoran Desert of Arizona, the unique architecture and a culture that spans both worlds — all while developing new skills and helping to further create community.

This hands-on program teaches participants how to steward land and sustainably manage water in a desert through techniques such as improving a rainwater catchment systems, restoring and tending a bioswale orchard and adjusting solar panels for an aquifer well pump.

This enriching experience merges theory and practice, providing attendees with real-world approaches to sustainable living in a desert environment. Throughout the course, participants will create meaningful and positive change as a team, present and celebrate their work with everyone, and live, work, and play in the same space.

Upon graduation, students will join the more than 8,000 alumni who have helped build the arcology of Arcosanti since its inception in 1970.

The cost of this four-week educational experience is $1,550 ($500 for seminar week and $350 per regular work week).
