Education Department Shares Improperly Redacted Document

Education officials in Arizona have released a spreadsheet naming every parent with an Empowerment Scholarship Account in the state.

The release allegedly violates federal student privacy laws. Arizona Capitol Times reported that the state Department of Education released the spreadsheet documenting account balances, parents' names, email addresses, the grade level of their student and what type of disability the student has.

A department spokesman says the document should have been redacted because giving out that information would violate the Family Educational Rights of Privacy Act.

Officials say a group that opposes the program also received the same document.
