I-40 Westbound Reopens After Car Chase And Shootout Early Friday Morning

A 53-mile stretch of westbound Interstate-40 east of Holbrook reopened earlier today after being closed for several hours because of law enforcement situation.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, New Mexico State Police were pursuing heavily armed homicide suspects from New Mexico when the suspects began to shoot at the officers. Other troopers deployed ahead of the suspects and returned fire. The suspects’ vehicle was disabled and a 37-year-old man and a 25-year-old women were taken into custody. They’re being held in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department and face multiple felony charges in Arizona as a result of the incident.

“Our state troopers should be commended for their fast thinking and bravery in stopping a lethal threat that entered into our state,” said Lt. Colonel Heston Silbert, Deputy Director of AZDPS.

The suspects were driving a white Dodge Ram pickup truck which was reported stolen. No civilians, trooper or suspects were injured.
