Hart Prairie Restoration Project Will Again Donate Firewood To Indigenous Communities

US Forest Service/Coconino National Forest

Coconino National Forest officials say they’ll contribute firewood to local tribes as part of the ongoing Hart Prairie meadow restoration project.

It’s the second year for the effort dubbed Wood for Life. It’s a partnership with the National Forest Foundation, local tribes and communities and the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps.

More than 300 cords of wood will be donated to the Hopi and Navajo Nations along with other vulnerable Indigenous populations.

In addition to providing firewood, the project is removing young, fast-growing trees that are encroaching on the meadow and clearing the area of potential fuel for wildfires.
