Arizona Congressman Paul Gosar is formally asking the U.S. Navy to consider naming one of its new warships the "U.S.S. Granite Mountain" in honor of the 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots killed during the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire.
Gosar said in a written news release he was recently asked by a fire chief in Prescott to see if the Navy would consider the proposal.
Gosar said he believes it’s a great idea and it would honor the fallen as well as honor the military. Granite Mountain is located just outside Prescott and it was the namesake for the crew.
There is a memorial there now, and the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park was dedicated in 2016 as a place to remember the fallen members of the hotshot crew.
