Officials in Wyoming have reached an agreement with a Navajo tribal mining firm that would give the state of Wyoming authority to take the company to court to enforce environmental laws at two coal mines.

A Navajo Nation company says it has an agreement to pay outstanding taxes and royalties on three large coal mines that it bought last year in Wyoming and Montana.

Montana officials say a Navajo Nation company may continue operating a coal mine for two more months amid negotiations over the terms of a state permit.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez says the tribe will not financially back the bonds a tribal energy company needs for a trio of newly acquired coal mines off the reservation. The Navajo Transitional Energy Company recently bought Montana's largest coal mine and two others in Wyoming at auction after Cloud Peak Energy declared bankruptcy.
