The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals today released two opinions affecting uranium mining near Grand Canyon National Park. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports, one case was brought by the Havasupai Tribe and environmental groups, and the other by the National Mining Association.

The Navajo Generating Station is slated to close in 2019, and officials are considering several potential buyers to prevent the shutdown. In July, U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and Salt River Project officials met with the U.S.-based company NantWorks. They discussed converting the coal-fired plant into a high-powered solar facility incorporating a new energy storage technique using molten salt. To find out exactly what this technology is, KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius spoke with University of Arizona engineering professor Peiwen Li who specializes in renewables.

Several environmental groups have sued the Trump administration over its review of more than two dozen national monuments. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports, the lawsuit alleges officials are illegally withholding details about the process.

The Interior Department has proposed more than doubling entrance fees at the Grand Canyon and several other national parks throughout the country. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports, 90 members of Congress sent a letter this week to Secretary Ryan Zinke condemning the proposal.
