Decreased fire danger resulting from recent rain and increased humidity is allowing three national forests in Arizona to lift all or some of their fire restrictions and area closures.

Authorities say firefighters have stopped the forward progress of a wildfire that prompted dozens of homes in a north-central Arizona forest to be put on pre-evacuation notice.

Officials in the communities of Pine and Strawberry this week put mandatory water restrictions in place. KNAU’s Ryan Heinsius reports, it’s one of the only areas in the state to have implemented heightened water conservation measures this year.

People experiencing homelessness often turn to national forests as a temporary place to live. But, partial closures on the Coconino due to fire danger are steering many out of the woods and into already crowded shelters. As KNAU’s Aaron Granillo reports, non-profits, churches, police, and others are teaming up to offer safe and legal options for the region’s homeless.
