Everyone in Flagstaff knows Milton Road, but few know that Milton once was a separate company town owned by the Arizona Lumber & Timber Company. Centered on today's Riordan Road, Milton provided housing and amenities to workers at the Arizona Lumber & Timber Company sawmill, the largest employer in northern Arizona from the 1880s to the 1930s. In this talk, David Portree, guide for Riordan Mansion State Historic Park's Milton walking tours, and NAU history professor Michael Amundson, an expert on company towns, will discuss Milton in its heyday and how it was similar to and different from other company towns in the American West.

This storytelling workshop is designed for writers who want to enhance their narrative skills by focusing on story structure, particularly the classic three-act framework. Participants will explore how Act One sets up the story and introduces key characters and conflicts, Act Two deepens the plot and raises the stakes, and Act Three brings resolution and emotional payoff. Through explanations and discussions, writers will learn how to map their stories within this structure, ensuring clarity and engagement for readers. Attendees will also explore what makes a good scene and how to build strong conflict, clear purpose, vivid setting, and meaningful character actions. Each scene should move the plot forward or reveal something essential about the characters. Participants will be invited to describe their own works, including works in progress, sharing both triumphs—such as breakthrough moments, compelling characters, or successful plot twists—and challenges like pacing issues or structural confusion. This collaborative environment will foster constructive feedback, allowing writers to support each other and refine their storytelling techniques. By analyzing examples and workshopping their own material, participants will leave with practical strategies to craft scenes that captivate readers and strengthen the overall story. Jan Bear is a successful author, editor, and award-winning book designer who has been designing book interiors for decades. Jan has also worked as a newspaper layout consultant for approximately two decades. Prescott Writers is hosted by Central Arizona Writers and presented with funding from the Friends of the Prescott Public Library.
