Prescott Valley Public Library will be offering Meeting the Ancestors: How Speculative Memoir Can Help You Connect to Your History on September 20, 2025. Join us for this free writing workshop, where you'll explore two powerful tools to help As Shakespeare said, “What’s past is prologue.” What if the voices of your ancestors could help you tell your story? What would change? What would stay the same? Our lives are bound to the lives that came before us, and if we’re able to listen, we might find our dead have been speaking to us all along. Speculative memoir is an umbrella genre in which the questions of the memoirist’s book are addressed through speculative elements, which may include ghosts, metaphors, what ifs, imaginative scenarios, and fantasies. Using the speculative to imagine the lives and inner worlds of our ancestors can unlock powerful connections within our stories, both on and off the page. We’ll look at a few examples of speculative memoirs that specifically connect to the past, explore ways to use the device in your own work, and do some generative writing exercises. Bring something to write with and on! This workshop is for adults only.Laraine Herring is a retired professor of creative writing and psychology. Her memoir, A Constellation of Ghosts: A Speculative Memoir with Ravens, was released from Regal House in 2021. She’s also the author of a trilogy of writing books, including Writing Begins with the Breath, the editor of Becoming Real: Women Reclaim the Power of the Imagined through Speculative Nonfiction, and the author and illustrator for The Grief Forest: a book about what we don’t talk about. She’s currently working on another memoir called Solving for X: A Speculative Memoir of Mothers, and the second book in the Grief Forest trilogy: Bunny and Barncat: a book about grieving while loving what leaves, which will be released in 2026 from White River Press. laraineherring.comPre-registration is required.Saturday, September 20, 202512 PM- 2:00 PMCrystal RoomMore info? 928.759.3040

The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Naked Ambition” showing Sept. 19-25 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre.
Bunny Yeager, once heralded as the world's prettiest photographer, had a huge influence on 20th-century pop culture, though few people know her name.
Whether by popularizing the bikini, helping discover Bettie Page, shaping the image of Playboy, or inventing the selfie, Bunny was a trailblazer whose work bucked against conservative 1950s America and helped pave the way for the feminist movement and the sexual revolution. Yet the very changes she helped usher in would soon render her a forgotten relic — until now.
Featuring testimonies from Dita VonTeese, Bruce Weber and Larry King, “Naked Ambition” is a rediscovery of a brilliant yet overlooked artist.
“Naked Ambition” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre Sept. 19-25. Showtimes will be Friday, Saturday and Monday, Sept. 19, 20 and 22 at 3:30 p.m.; and Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 23 and 25 at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $12, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A, in West Sedona. For more information, visit: www.SedonaFilmFestival.org.
The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Waltzing with Brando” showing Sept. 19-25 at the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres.
“Waltzing with Brando” follows Marlon Brando (Billy Zane) — then the most famous actor in the world — as he filmed “Mutiny on the Bounty” and bought a tiny and uninhabitable island in Tahiti. His intent was to escape his hectic Hollywood lifestyle and show the world the path to sustainability.
To achieve this goal, he plucks Judge (Jon Heder) — an obscure but idealistic Los Angeles architect — from his stable existence and convinces him that together they could build the world's first truly sustainable ecological retreat.
This beautifully shot film captures a lesser-known pursuit of the legendary actor during a time in his life when he was shooting some of his more acclaimed roles. The dichotomy between his in-demand Hollywood projects and his pursuit of calmness and sustainability are charmingly told in this film set in one of the most breathtaking places on Earth.
“Waltzing with Brando” — based on a true story — also stars Richard Dreyfuss.
“Waltzing with Brando” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres Sept. 19-25. Showtimes will be Friday, Sept. 19 at 2:00 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 20 at 3:00 p.m.; Sunday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m.; Monday, Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m.; Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 4:00 p.m.; Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 3:30 p.m.; and Thursday, Sept. 25 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.
