Arizona State Sen. Carlyle Begay announced the suspension of his campaign for northeast Arizona's congressional seat and endorsed Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu.

The Arizona attorney general's office has opened an investigation into House Speaker David Gowan to determine if he misused state resources while campaigning for Congress.

Spokeswoman for the attorney general Mia Garcia confirmed the investigation Thursday but would not go into detail because the investigation is ongoing.

Gowan requested the attorney general look into the issue after the Arizona Capitol Times published an analysis of the Sierra Vista Republican's use of rented state vehicles and his claims for daily per diem payments.

A new report says Republicans have an edge in Arizona’s 2016 U.S. Senate race. But the state’s five-term incumbent John McCain still faces challenges from Democrats as well as from within his own party. Arizona Public Radio’s Ryan Heinsius reports.


Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and State House Speaker David Gowan have each entered the 2016 race for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District. It’s the office currently held by Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick who’s stepping down to challenge John McCain for his U.S. Senate seat. Arizona Public Radio’s Ryan Heinsius reports.
