We invite you to volunteer at Riordan Mansion State Historic Park!

The duplex-style Riordan Mansion remains one of the finest examples of American Arts and Crafts-
style architecture open to the public today. Designed by the architect of the impressive El Tovar Hotel
at the Grand Canyon, Charles Whittlesey, the homes were built in 1904 with indoor plumbing, hot
and cold running water, central heat, and electric lights, reflecting the most modern technology and
design of the time.
Seen by guided tour only, the interiors of the Riordan family homes look essentially as they did in 1904.
The homes showcase original family belongings including fine examples of early Stickley furniture.

Volunteer opportunities available include Front Desk, Interpretive Tours, Grounds and Maintenance services.

Does your child love stories and furry friends? Join us for a tail-wagging good time that nurtures literacy, one paw at a time. Paws for Reading offers a relaxed space where children can read aloud to trained therapy dogs. This program helps build reading confidence, improve fluency, and make reading fun! No registration required. Paws for Reading is presented monthly on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 3:30 pm. There will be plenty to see and learn at Willow Bend Environmental Education Center at this event for younger children. Come see some not so hungry caterpillars made of stilt-walkers transform into a group of enchantingly beautiful butterflies! Your little one can see the four phases of a butterfly’s life through puppet storytelling, as well as witness an amazing circus performance— all for free! At Willow Bend, there are many exciting things to see!

Join Art Historian Dr. Elizabeth Marlowe of Colgate University for a discussion of the so-called Elgin Marbles—one of the best known cases of contested cultural objects in museums.

The Elgin Marbles refer to a large group of sculptures and reliefs that were removed from the Parthenon temple in Athens by a British lord in the early 19th century. Today they reside in the British Museum.

Greece has been actively seeking their return since the 1980s, and many international organizations—including some in Britain—have advocated on Greece's behalf. This talk will examine the arguments that have been made in support of the Greek case and how these arguments have changed over time. In particular, we will focus on long-standing assertions about the alleged “exceptionalism” of the Parthenon sculptures and whether or not such arguments help or harm the larger cause of the decolonization of museums.

"At this month's Prescott Writers, Diane Phelps will discuss the necessity of solid research for any piece of fiction, and how to do it most efficiently. She will define historical fiction and cover some good research sources and efficient tools to help with the job. If you have written a book of historical fiction, please bring a copy with you or if you are working on one. Who are your favorite historical fiction writers and why?
Diane Phelps Budden spent over 30 years in corporate and academic marketing in Michigan before moving to Sedona, Arizona. She has authored a number of books and has taught college business classes, as well as visited schools, libraries, and museums around Arizona to present raven presentations, story hours, and workshops about self-publishing.
Prescott Writers is hosted by Central Arizona Writers and presented with funding from the Friends of the Prescott Public Library."

Bird enthusiasts join a naturalist for a guided walk appropriate for beginner and advanced birders. The Audubon Society has designated Red Rock State Park as part of the Lower Oak Creek Important Birding Area (IBA) because of the many species that live or visit here. Please meet up with the leader on the viewing deck above the visitor center. This walk is included with your park entry fee.

Every morning, a volunteer naturalist leads a guided nature walk informing visitors about the different life zones of Red Rock State Park. The subjects discussed on this walk may include geology, wildlife, history, archeology, and plant life. The naturalists welcome questions during the walk, enhancing the learning experience. This walk is included with your park entry fee.
