Flash flooding across the Navajo Nation has damaged roads, forced evacuations and claimed three lives as a late-season surge of monsoon moisture brings heavy rain to the Four Corners region.

The flood comes after a different deluge on Aug. 29 destroyed infrastructure and led to the deaths of three hikers.

Navajo police say two adults and a juvenile were washed away by a flood near Newcomb, New Mexico early Wednesday. Several other areas on the Navajo Nation are also dealing with flooding.

Last year’s Dragon Bravo Fire increased runoff on the North Rim, but experts say it had only a limited impact on August’s deadly flooding.

The South Kaibab Trail is now closed below the Tip-Off, a landmark and resting area, and the Bright Angel Trail is off limits to visitors below the intersection with the Tonto Trail.
