Join Diné educator and cultural presenter Emerson John for an introduction to Diné understandings of the night sky.

Through stories, teachings, and discussions of traditional constellations, John will explore how the stars serve as guides for knowledge, cultural identity, and relationships with the natural world.

This presentation offers an opportunity to learn about the enduring significance of celestial knowledge within Diné culture and to consider how different communities have developed distinct ways of understanding and interpreting the night sky. Presented in conjunction with NightVisions: AMBER, the program highlights Indigenous perspectives on the cosmos and the importance of preserving dark skies for future generations.

Celebrate the freedom to read with the Banned Book Club. In March, we're reading The Glass House by Jeannette Walls We will discuss not only the book itself, but also the concepts of free speech and censorship as we encounter them in the modern world.

Synopsis

A remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette's brilliant and charismatic father captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn't want the responsibility of raising a family.

The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.

Irish Night, a new addition to Charly's legendary musical array, will take place every Thursday, 7-9:30pm in Flagstaff's Weatherford Hotel. It features Wild World Irish Fiddle, a blend of authentic, dreamy melodies, stomping jigs, and reels with world and Latin twists, as traditional fiddler Kate Rose joins forces with masterful multi-genre guitarist Armand Ramirez. Result: an intoxicating fusion and original, deeply rooted musical experience. The icing on the cake: all the dancers out there will love getting down to the fiery sounds, as Kate teaches simple Irish dance moves and configurations to liven your party. There may even be drinking games or drinking dances. Lovers of Ireland and all things Celtic will connect with poetic interludes and stories from Kate's years in County Clare learning among the fiddling farmers. Fadeaway Sessions is a live music series benefitting environmentally-focused non-profits through 1% For The Planet.

Roll in, drop bag, and listen in. Each show features a different musician — some artists are local and some are taking a detour from the open road. Genres range from Indie Folk and Americana to Cosmic Country and beyond. Performances are relaxed, stripped back, and intimate — akin to a living room jam session. Sessions are always free and open to the public.

Forest Magic Camp gathers campers in Flagstaff aged 7-12 for an introductory experience within the wilderness. Campers build confidence and ease towards outdoor activities such as camping and hiking, while also forming strong and unique friendships.

At camp, they get to test their skills with slack lines, hammocks, hiking, and bouldering all while enjoying the fun of place-based outdoor crafts and the company of many caring adult and teen Trail Wizards and trail Wizards in Training dedicated to exploring the magic of the forest!

At Forest Magic Camp and Forest Fridays campers join a group of young explorers for an introductory wilderness experience that builds comfort and confidence with outdoor, camping, and hiking skills while developing strong, unique, and inclusive friendships.

Campers learn to support each other and share in their challenges and victories as they get their hands dirty learning about Coconino County forests, animals, and geology.

At camp, they get to test their skills with slack lines, hammocks, hiking, and bouldering all while enjoying the fun of place-based outdoor crafts and the company of many caring adult and teen Trail Wizards and trail Wizards in Training dedicated to exploring the magic of the forest!
